Chapter 20 Summary
The bishops are scheduled to meet at the archiepiscopal residences to discuss the cardinal's kidnapping. Cardinal Bem surprises them at the meeting and all are relieved to see him, except for Archbishop Krasnoy and Bishop John Charnowski. He meets with the two in private, and they admit to planning on inciting the riots, but deny that they had Gregor Danekin and his sister try to murder the cardinal. They admit that they are working with a man called Waldemar Keller, the leader of the Christian Fighters, a man who has apparently lied to the two bishops about the lengths of violence he will take to make the people rise up against the government. Upon learning of the attempt on the cardinal's life, Archbishop Krasnoy remains defiant. Cardinal Bem forbids him to give the address at the mass in Rywald the next day. Bishop...
