Chapter 17 Summary
Janik, Peter Jop's brother-in-law, is the driver who takes Cardinal Bem to Gneisk. They are stopped in the middle of the night by the police and brought to prison with very little explanation. Cardinal Bem is dismayed to see a photo of himself at the station as a person to watch for. The police find Bem's identification card in his pocket, realize who he is, and are very excited to be the ones to have discovered him. They arrange to fly him to an undisclosed location.
Chapter 17 Analysis
Chapter seventeen reveals that the government has indeed been looking very hard for Cardinal Bem, although it is still unclear as for what purpose.
