New York City
All of the short stories in the collection are set in New York City. In some of the stories, the narrator names the borough in which the narrative takes place. Most often, the borough or neighborhood remains unnamed. Because Paley was a native to New York City, and lived here for much of her life, her renderings of the city are vivid and authentic. Indeed, many of the stories' scenarios, conflicts, and themes confront issues related to city life.
The Park
Many of the stories in the collection are set in an unnamed park, or playground. Most often, Faith, or the other mothers central to these stories, take their children to the park.
