Summary

Chapter one is in a constant state of flux between past and present. After a brief few pages in the present, where Jenny is getting ready for her 75th birthday, Chapter 1 begins.

The chapter opens up with Simen, Gunnar, and Christian, three boys, digging at dusk under a tree for a treasure pail they had all left there the previous summer. While digging they stumbled upon some bones. The authorities are contacted and it is discovered that the bones belong to a girl who had gone missing two years previously. Her name had been Milla.

From here the reader enters into a flashback of the boys the previous summer trying to decide how to cement their friendships even further, since they only saw each other when their families come to the coast for vacation months. One of the boys decided on a blood pact...
