Ryan “Rye” Dolan
Although the novel is in some ways structured as an ensemble piece, Ryan “Rye” Dolan is arguably the protagonist. Rye is often a passive observer, but his point of view is central to the story’s structure. Also, the novel’s main storylines generally hinge either on Rye’s actions, or on other characters’ actions relating to Rye. At the beginning of the novel, Rye is 16 years old. After Rye’s parents die, Rye joins his transient older brother Gig. They travel around the Pacific Northwest, searching for work. Gig often associates with pro-union labor activists, which makes Rye nervous, as corporatists and police departments often seek to persecute unionists. After police arrest Rye and Gig in connection with unionists, Rye is released because he is only 16 years old.
