Summary
In Chapter 20, Bolin leads Rye, Flynn, and Reston to the notoriously dangerous mining settlement called Taft. In a central meeting place in the settlement, Flynn gives a typically rousing speech about the need to oppose the oppressive industrialists. A surprising number of miners donate to the cause. Afterward, a group of men approaches with knives and take the money. It becomes evident that the men mean to kill Flynn, Rye, and Reston. However, Flynn remains unperturbed, and she speaks frankly and fiercely about how she is working to help all workers, including the men currently robbing them. The men are stunned and even moved. The thieves keep the money, but they allow Flynn, Rye, and Reston to leave. In Chapter 21, as the three of them leave Taft, they discuss the now apparent fact that Bolin set up the ambush.
