Summary
In Chapter 9, the police move the arrested unionists to an abandoned school building to be held there temporarily. The conditions are terrible. Eventually a young lawyer named Fred Moore arrives, demanding to represent the unionists in court. In Chapter 10, Moore proves to be a very adept lawyer, and he manages to secure Rye’s release, as Rye is only 16 years old. The judge dismisses all charges against Rye. However, the judge is sympathetic to the police and the industrialists, and he refuses to release any of the other prisoners or dismiss their charges. The following subchapter is narrated by Jules. Jules becomes deathly ill in jail. He is delivered to his niece just before he dies.
