Summary
In Chapter 6, Rachel picked Ann up in a town car and gave her a new dress to wear to the dinner. Aruna Mehta was the only other guest and the quartet shared negronis on the patio as they discussed tarot which “only became part of the occult in the eighteenth century” (63). Rachel averred that “there’s still an argument to be made for occult use in the fifteenth century, especially somewhere between Venice, Ferrara, and Milan” (64). Unlike Rachel, Patrick held less hesitation around tarot and pontificated, “Just think of the legitimacy it would give the practice today—if we knew that there was a deck of cards from the fifteenth century, an early deck, maybe even the earliest deck that was used for the same purpose” (65). Later, Patrick pulled cards for Ann who was reluctant to acknowledge the resonance of their symbology...
