Summary

In Part 2, Chapter 13, set in the summer of 1928, as Leonard went for a swim in the Thames River, he thought about his brother, Tom. Tom had been only 13 months younger than Leonard. Tom had seemed to live a charmed life. He was better at everything than Leonard, even holding his breath underwater. Walking back to Birchwood Manor, Leonard thought about the ironies of the war in which he and his brother had fought. Leonard had left college to enlist only because Tom had done so. When Leonard returned from the war, he no longer recognized the world.
