Good versus Evil

While a traditional theme of good versus evil exists in this graphic novel, a slight twist is added by including characters who are not as clear cut where they stand, or will stand in the future, on the side of good versus evil.

Valerian and Laureline are on the side of good. They work for the Spatio-Temporal Agency and their job is to travel the universe, fixing any situation that their agency officials assign. They have never traveled to 1986 before, and are actually banned from that time period by Galaxity's organizational charter. However, they feel that Xombul poses a sufficient threat to disobey that ban.

In many ways, Valerian is a stereotypical hero. He literally laughs off dangerous situations and successfully fights off several villains at once. He says that it does not matter if he winds up underwater when he arrives in 1986, because...
