Nahri
Nahri is a young black-haired, brown-skinned woman with “unnaturally black eyes” (6). Nahri is somewhere in her twenties, and she is not “what many would call beautiful—years of living on the streets had left her much thinner and far dirtier than men typically preferred—her bright eyes and sharp face usually spurred a second glance” (6). She wears a headdress, veil, and a black abaya.
Even though Nahri herself heals quickly and can miraculously heal others, her abilities are so organic and natural to her she does not question their existence; nor does she think of her abilities as out of the ordinary. She does, however, feel different from others, a fact that she learned after “a number of painful lessons” (15) as a child. Her different quality makes her feel as if she is “the only sighted person in a world of the blind” (16).
