Summary
Chapter 12
On his way back to the palace, Ali encounters his secretary, Rashid, by the Plaza Fountain. Rashid offers to bring Ali to a Tukharistani orphanage. Ali goes and recognizes immediately that it is the safe house Anas mentioned to him the night he was captured. At the orphanage, Ali finds a room of sleeping shafit children, including the girl he had seen at the tavern, and meets Hanno and an older woman, Hui Fatamai. The group requests Ali continues funding the Tanzeem and its works to save the shafit. Because he is still angry about the Tanzeem’s possessing weapons, Ali denies their request. The group allows Ali to leave, and they allow Ali more time on which to consider their needs.
