David Strorm
David is the son of Joseph and Emily Strorm. As a child, he has a recurring dream of a big city on a bay despite never having seen a city. Having grown up in a highly-religious post-apocalyptic town called Waknuk, David has been taught to hate mutants his whole life. David fears his father and the religious fervor that grips his hometown. He is naive for the first twelve years of his life, and sees the hysteria through the innocent eyes of a child. David befriends a girl his age, Sophie, with a mutated foot. He helps hide her disfigurement from public scrutiny; he does not see her as an ungodly mutant despite the fact she fits the description. When Sophie is caught, David is beaten by his father for his part in concealing her. He is consumed by guilt.
