Summary
David awoke to find himself tied to his horse. The Fringes people had captured them all, and were escorting them back to their encampment. David and Rosalind telepathically expressed their love for each other. Contrary to rumor, the Fringes people were not frightening-looking. They were even kind. They ambushed the intruders as a matter of course. David engaged in a conversation with one of his captors. David said he had been taught the Devil ruled the Fringes. The man waxed philosophical on Waknuk: “They weren't God's last word like they thought: God doesn't have any last word. If He did He'd be dead. But He isn't dead; and He changes and grows, like everything else that's alive” (154). David argued Waknuk was government approved.
