World War II
World War II began in the late 1930's and came to an end in the mid-1940's. It involved conflict between many of the world's major economic, political, and military powers. A key component in the conflict was the ambition of Nazi Germany to both control Europe and to eliminate Jews and other "undesirables." The author's experiences before, during, and after her experiences in Auschwitz (including, for example, her liberation at the hands of American soldiers) are all defined, to one degree or another, by the context of World War II.
The Holocaust
The Holocaust is the name given to the genocide perpetrated by the Nazis on Jews during World War II. It was a defining and motivating component of that war's conflict, an act of mass murder that cost upwards of five million Jewish men, women, and children their lives.
