Summary
In Chapter 2, “What You Put in Your Mind”, Dr. Eger (“Dicuka”) uses first-person, present-tense narration as she describes being woken up in the middle of the night by the arrival of Nazi soldiers who demand that the family pack up and be ready to leave. “Dicuka” is upset at being left on her own by her mother, who packs some food and mementoes of Klara. Meanwhile, “Dicuka” puts on the thin silk dress she wore when she was last with Eric, believing that he was being gathered up as well and choosing to think that wearing the dress will help bring them close together.
