Chapters 5 and 6 Summary

Bettina is reading Madame Bovary for school. Bettina knows some French because she spends every summer in France with Babs's cousin, Cecile, because Babs needs a break. Babs comes into Bettina's room with a stack of magazines. Bettina hides the book because when Babs catches her reading, Babs says Bettina is showing off.

Babs says they should go shoe shopping for Bettina tomorrow. She shows Bettina some of the shoes she's already picked out. Even though Bettina doesn't like any of the shoes, she's excited to spend the day shopping with her mother. When the book slides off the bed and knocks over a hidden ginger ale can under Bettina's bed, Babs goes crazy.
