Chapters 3 and 4 Summary
In December 1979, Bettina's class is working on invitations for the annual father's breakfast. When Ms. Henderson, the teacher, notices Bettina isn't working on her invite, Bettina explains that she doesn't have a father and her mother's never told her anything about her father. Ms. Henderson suggests Bettina invite her mother instead. Bettina decides not to tell Ms. Henderson her mother doesn't get up before noon, certainly not to have breakfast in a school cafeteria. When the teacher isn't looking, Bettina throws her invitation away.
When Bettina gets home from school, Babs asks about her day, which Bettina enjoys. Bettina tells Babs about what happened and asks about her father. Babs says they promised to keep his identity a secret. In a moment of compassion, Babs gives Bettina a silver coin that her father won at a Latin tournament in high school...
