Summary
In Chapter Nine: "Henry's House," Shelley is excited to see Henry's living space. Henry explains Aviva wastes too much time trying to get him and Ted to talk when they have nothing to say. Henry complains they are too tired for people who barely work, clearly not valuing their careers. He also dismisses Shelley's idea to visit China and says that he lives life however he wants. Shelley, recalling how he cared for his father, humors Henry.
As Henry sleeps, Shelley explores the kitchen, finding numerous cookbooks and family photos. At dinner, Henry says Diana loved to try new recipes. She once called Ted an outside observer, but Henry feels Ted gave up before that took him anywhere. Then, Henry says he will help Shelley learn enough history to pass the citizenship test.
