Summary

The final section begins with Emma's present tense narrative. She thought telling Jude about the rape would make her feel better, but it did not since Jude denied it happened, still thinking the best of Will. But Emma keeps moving forward so she and Kate drive to confront Will. At his cottage Emma says she wants to talk about what happened when she was fourteen. She tells him that he raped her, a child, but he accuses her of being mentally ill. He tells her to stop making false accusations, but she says she is going to the police. Kate defends Emma and charges Will with breaking the trust that Emma thought she had with someone who was like a father to her.
