Nothing can be taken for granted in a life or death situation. The lives of Alex, Daniel, and Kevin are on the line throughout the entire novel. Everything they do, they must do carefully and thoroughly. The are paranoid because their lives are at stake.

When the novel begins, readers are introduced to Alex, who has been on the run for three years. She is in a constant state of paranoia. When she goes to sleep, she sleeps in a bathtub.
