Summary

In Chapter 1, awoman calling herself Chris Taylor (at the present time) must live her life very carefully and keep undetected so she can stay alive. This means scouting out multiple towns before settling down for a brief while. She visits public libraries to steal books, including novels, so that she might consider creative ways of handling her routine. She sneaks to use the laptops of others to do things like check her e-mail, after which she puts miles of distance between herself and the place where she checked, just in case. “Just in case” is the mantra of over preparing in life that Chris lives by. She handles occasional light jobs to make enough money to get by and purchase the things she needs for survival, such as chemical components.
