Part IV: Chapters 31 - 36 Summary
In Chapter 31, Sam and Lisa are being held prisoner at the Charm School. For several days, each is kept in a small windowless concrete cell. They are beaten and Burov has tortured and intimidated them both, especially Lisa. Both Sam and Lisa are tried before KGB tribunals for the murder of the two Border guards in the woods of Borodino. Sam and Lisa plead guilty and they each craft a formal confession recounting the details of their trip to Mozhaisk. They are interrogated, starved, and psychologically tormented before Burov has them placed in a cell together.
In Chapter 32, Burov seems to have changed his tactics. He allows Sam and Lisa to shower, eat, and put on clean warm clothes. Burov, however, shows his true colors when he makes a startling ultimatum: either Lisa and Sam agree to...
