Summary
In Chapter 7, Cora and Louise arrive in New York City. Louise is immediately thrilled and feels she has come home. The bustling city and her own exhaustion after the long voyage overwhelm Cora. They get in a taxi, which takes them to the apartment where they will be staying. The apartment is much smaller than anywhere they had previously lived. Cora immediately goes to take a bath, and Louise is ready to explore the city. Louise suggests she will go out when Cora is in the bath, to which Cora demands she stay. When Louise protests, Cora is frank. She asks Louise if she wants to be raped. Louise, flustered, agrees not to leave. Cora bathes and thinks about what she will discover while in New York.
