Summary

Around the time of the hurricane and her conversation with the man, the woman also spent her time visiting "churches and synagogues" (175). One of the churches she visited was a Baptist church. During the service, a group of women in white urged her to sit down. The woman, however, was anxious and upset, and could not bring herself to do so. She stood, instead, at the back of the sanctuary. She began to feel weak. Then "a procession of women in red robes" advanced rapidly towards her while singing (176). Nervous, the woman sped out of the hall and into the restroom, where she locked herself in a stall. She watched a fly. She felt so weak she did not know if she could get herself to stand up again.

The woman decides this episode might be important. Perhaps she should make the center...
