Marielle and Naomi invoke the friends' funeral pact for themselves when they undergo personal tragedies that shift their lives out of balance and force them to become a new version of themselves. Marielle is the first to trigger the pact, and she does so after her husband divorces her when her daughter is around 17 years old. She met her ex-husband, Max, in an art museum mere weeks after Alec's death years ago, and the two marry and raise a child together shortly thereafter. However, he participated in numerous infidelities, and in a way their breakup was a merciful end. Marielle has to figure out what new direction to take her life in, which is why she gathers her friends together to help her. Naomi does the same thing when her parents die, and her funeral ends with her proclaiming that she is becoming a new version...
