Lije goes to Spacetown to find the robot. A force barrier instated by the Spacers 25 years earlier makes it difficult for humans to enter Spacetown. Anyone wishing to enter Spacetown must pass a medical inspection; this initially caused riots and the Spacers erected a barrier, which was eventually lifted. Dr. Sarton's murder has been assigned to the Commissioner's office because Spacetown is still under City jurisdiction.
In modern-day Earth, there are new meanings for things like cities and expressways, which are explained as Lije travels to Spacetown. Lije wonders how his Spacetown robot partner will adapt to life in the City. R. Daneel Olivaw has none of the characteristics of an Earth robot but is quite humanoid, which shocks Lije.
