Washington, D.C. is the city in which Ellie lives in the narrative present. After graduating from college, she moves to Washington and takes a job with the online news journal Apogee. She lives in a community living setup called 1938 House with Mallory, Aidan, Nick, and Katherine. Her life in Washington is evidence that Ellie has finally entered the adult world. However, in the wake of her father's passing, Ellie finds it increasingly difficult to navigate her personal life in Washington. Whenever she leaves the city to visit her family in Maryland or Florida, she tells herself that when she returns, she will move on with her life and forget her pain and sorrow. However, as soon as she returns to the city, she finds that her internal unrest has come along with her.
