Summary
In Chapter 8, Ellie spent the next day with Colette and Van. The house contained their grief (100). While sitting together, Van pried open a “catch at the back” of the tie rack, but there was nothing inside (100). Ellie felt “something . . . like heartbreak” (100). After Van went to bed, Ellie and Colette talked. Ellie told herself she would “get on with [her] life” (102). Then Colette suggested they visit a shaman together. When she saw the shaman last, she told Colette that Jim was trying to contact her (104). Ellie was skeptical.
Lying awake, Ellie thought about entropy and disorder. She got up and looked through Jim’s yearbook for L. M. Taylor, discovering a boy named Larry Taylor with whom Jim had played baseball. She found Larry online and emailed him about Jim’s death and the baseball.
