Barry Fairbrother
Barry Fairbrother is only alive very briefly at the beginning of the book. He is writing an article for the Yarvil Gazette about Krystal Weedon and the positive influence that the Fields being part of Pagford has had on her. While he is writing this article, he remembers that it is his nineteenth wedding anniversary and hastily makes reservations to take his wife out.
Though the other characters in the book talk about Barry as if he were a saint, the brief glimpse that the reader gets of him suggests that he isn't what everyone believed him to be. Mary Fairbrother suggests that though her husband was attentive to civic matters and very likable, he didn't spend enough time and energy on his family.
