Chapter 10: And Still the Floes Came Down . . . Summary
The final chapter of the book begins with a character that started the book, Kostia. He has been sent by the Regional Committee as a militant from the Young Communists to work in a kolkhoze. It is here that he meets and falls in love with Maria.
Kostia and the agronomist of the kolkhoze are frustrated because there are no trucks to carry the wheat to the township thirty-four miles away. They come up with a plan where the people will carry the wheat on their backs if the Committee won't send them the trucks they need.
