Summary

In Chapter 28, Viola and Eva are out looking for Kim, while Lillian and Baby Vi wait at home. Lillian walks by her hall closet and recalls Joe locking her inside it for hours at a time when they were teenagers. Once she was locked in the closet, which Joe called “the penalty box” (253), for days while their father was away. When he came home, he was shocked to find her there, and immediately sent Joe away to the army. Lillian stands in the closet and calls Joe. He tells her that he was upset about not getting attention from their father, and that he took it out on her. She tells him that it was not her fault he was so unhappy, and that he is no longer welcome in her house. Lillian hangs up the phone and falls asleep in the closet...
