Bix lives in New York City. The chapter "The Affinity Charm" is set in this northeastern location. Although Bix is known everywhere he goes because of the success of his Mandala project, if he walks the New York streets alone at night, he can locate a sense of anonymity. Throughout "The Affinity Charm," the narrator primarily depicts Bix wandering the streets in search of answers to his plaguing internal questions. He revisits the sites of his past or enters new and unexpected terrains, hoping to jar himself awake to his life once more.
