Part 9, In the Dark: Chapters 8-14 and Epilogue, Arcanum Summary

In chapter eight, Nora watches as Smithback continues to die despite her best efforts.

In chapter nine, Pendergast looks around the lab and realizes it has not been touched in more than fifty years, creating another mystery.

In chapter ten, the Surgeon is close on Pendergast's heels. The Surgeon pauses to ponder the strange collections before once again focusing on Pendergast.

In chapter eleven, the Surgeon enters the lab and sees Pendergast collapsed on the floor of the next room. The Surgeon enters carefully. Pendergast asks that he kill him quick. Instead, the Surgeon sees that the room is filled with weapons. The Surgeon begins handling the weapons, finally choosing an executioner's axe to kill Pendergast with.
