Summary

Pages 107 to 134 -- After Thanksgiving, Julia's honors English teacher, Mr. Cartwright, invited her to join the prestigious middle school speech team. She began going to practices and tournaments, which meant that she carpooled home from school with Cassie much less than she had before. Julia made two new friends on the team, Jodie and Jensen, who were brother and sister. Julia was nervous about Cassie spending so much time home alone.

Julia became more afraid of her surroundings, and through news reports and movies she learned of all the different threats she faced as a woman, and as a person in general. Part of this knowledge involved realizing that men, even those you know, could be much more dangerous than you first thought. This passage is narrated in the present tense, with Julia dipping into the past tense to recount anecdotes she heard...
