Chapters 25-28 Summary

In chapter twenty-five, Backman walks out of his apartment and is approached by two men who know his real name. Backman learns they are from the FBI and are there investigating a possible bribe for his pardon. Backman walks away from them, aware they cannot arrest him without cause. Backman spends the day walking around, refusing to attend his morning tutoring session. When Backman meets Luigi for lunch, a possible fire causes an evacuation of the restaurant. Backman realizes that his backpack was left inside, but when they are allowed back in, it is missing. Backman knows that some of the operatives watching him must have taken it.

In chapter twenty-six, Backman meets Francesca at the same restaurant where they met the day before. Afterward, Backman realizes it would be dangerous to return to his apartment. Backman decides it is time...
