Chapters 9-12 Summary
In chapter nine, Backman falls into a routine of studying and eating. One afternoon, Luigi changes the routine by forcing Backman to eat his dinner alone in a local diner. Backman impresses himself with how well he does in ordering the meal. Unbeknown to Backman, Luigi makes daily reports to his supervisor, Whitaker, who in turn makes daily reports to Julia Javier, Teddy Maynard's employee. Julia has a daily meeting with Maynard in which she reports everything about Backman's progress in Italy. They also discuss Backman's family and other people he might attempt to contact, arranging to have their phones and homes tapped in case he does.
In chapter ten, Critz begins contacting people he once knew in Washington DC in an attempt to find out where Backman is. Unfortunately, people do not remember Critz as fondly as he thought they...
