Chapters 5-8 Summary
In chapter five, Neal Backman, the only child of Backman's three children who still speaks to his father, learns of his father's pardon. Neal, who was forced to relocate to Virginia in the wake of his father's downfall, wonders how long it will be before he hears from his father. At the military hospital, Backman is given a file that contains everything he needs to know about his new identity. Backman is to be Marco Lazzeri, a Canadian citizen whose parents are both Italian. Backman is instructed to memorize the information and be prepared to leave within the hour. Backman is driven off the military base and through the countryside of Italy, finally arriving in Treviso. Backman is sent into a café where he meets his handler, Luigi.
