Summary

In the Prologue, set ten years ago in San Jose, California, sixteen-year-old Khai realized there was something different about him when did not cry or feel grief at the funeral of his best friend, Andy. Andy’s mother believed Khai did not cry because he did not care about Andy.

When Khai was in elementary school, he had been sent to a psychologist who diagnosed him as being autistic. His family, who was from the countryside in Vietnam, did not pay much attention to the diagnosis they just thought of him as being different.

After the funeral, Khai believed that he was different in a bad way. He thought that since he could not grieve, it meant that he could not love either.
