Summary
In Chapter 9, Leon and Harry decide to go to the beach. Outside, they run into Becky, who Harry invites to join them. At first, Becky hesitates to agree to go without Pete, who is working. But in the end, Becky agrees. Harry sits in the back of the car, and Becky, who “fidgets with excitement, dances in her seat,” sits in the front (258). The beach is everything they wanted it to be; “The sky is the sea is the sea is the sky for ever” (259). On the beach, Harry and Becky cannot deny their attraction to one another; they “stroke each other’s wrists” (260). Meanwhile, Leon skips stones on the water.
