The Breakaway examines how an individual's weight affects both society's view of the person and the person's own feelings about their body. Abby has struggled to reconcile her weight with the world’s view of big people, resulting in her choosing to accept herself instead of attempting to conform to the world’s expectations. Abby is both angry and sickened when she realizes that her mother had gastric bypass surgery because she was victimized when she was heavy. Abby details her journey as she moved from a child who believed her mother was judging her based on her weight to an adult willing to give up what she believed was a safe relationship to give herself a chance at real happiness.
