Port of Spain

Port of Spain is the primary backdrop of the novel. Port of Spain is the capital of Trinidad and Tobago, the country in which Allie resides. While Allie once lived in the capital city, in the narrative present she lives in an outlying town.

When Allie learns that her childhood friend Jankie wants to move back to the Port of Spain area, Allie is shocked. She understands that Jankie might have a nostalgic attachment to the place, but does not know why she would want to give up her seemingly glamorous and idyllic life in America. Jankie tries to explain, but for Allie, anything would be better than her current reality. In spite of her confusion, she does start to make business plans with Jankie. They try to conceptualize opening a boutique in the Port of Spain area together.
