Loyalty
The relationships in the novel are based on loyalty. Loyalty is especially important in the relationship between Ruby and her friends. They went through great lengths to write up a list of rules for dating in a small school. As long as the girls stick strictly to that list, they promise each other that they won't have problems. Unfortunately, in the situation between Ruby and Kim, Kim technically followed the rules, but Ruby was still left feeling betrayed. Loyalty was also an issue in many of the romantic relationships, particularly concerning Jackson. Ruby never fully trusted Jackson with Heidi, and now Kim doesn't trust Jackson with Ruby. Before that, Kim didn't trust Finn with Ruby, and in the bathroom, Kim's betrayal reaches boiling point.
