Chapter Three (Hutch) Summary
When Ruby was writing the boyfriend list, she almost didn't include Hutch. It's not that anything terrible happened between them, but that Hutch has become "a leper" at Tate High. Hutch wasn't always unpopular. In fact, in fourth grade, he was one of the most popular kids in class, so Ruby was over the moon with excitement when Hutch put a bag of gummy bears in her locker one morning. When she pulled them out, she looked around and saw Hutch grinning at her from the corner. The two never talked about the gift, and certainly never held hands, but Ruby hid the gummy bears under her pillow and ate them slowly at night, thinking about how she kind-of had a boyfriend, and how nice it felt to be loved.
