Summary

In Chapter 17, "Zoe," Zoe cannot stop thinking about the man from Oxford. He is the person to whom she wants "to say yes" (94). While driving to Oxford, Betsy tells Zoe about one of her clients, seemingly "suggesting that feelings" are optional (95). Then they discuss relationships. Zoe wonders if her parents have things in common.

In Oxford, Betsy and Zoe head "in opposite directions" (96). Finally she runs into the man. His name is Rufus. While walking together, Rufus describes his university studies in philosophy. Zoe is embarrassed she is still in high school. Over tea, Rufus admits he is "not looking for a relationship" (101). Zoe is disappointed. Then Rufus shows her a mummy at the museum. They talk about love. On her way to meet Betsy, Zoe sees Hal's lover.
