Summary
In Chapter 11, “Candy Man,” the volunteers begin serving. Matt is handing out chicken and Love reminds him to save the chicken legs for the youngest. Matt meets a man everyone calls “Candy Man” and learns he once played for the Knicks. Love says he fell victim to drugs, which is why he is now homeless. After the meal, everyone refuses to play chess with Candy Man. Though he is not good at the game, Matt plays. Candy Man wins in eight moves. Matt plays again, though it is clear he is no match for Candy Man. He understands that Candy Man simply wants someone to play with him. Candy Man asks why Matt is helping and makes it clear he is protective of Love. The subject turns to Candy Man's career. He confirms that drugs were a problem and says he barely remembers...
