Summary
In Chapter 7, “Against the Rules,” Matt begins to look forward to his dreams about his mother's funeral because she is never dead and he considers that a short time to be with his mother. After three weeks, Jackson is transferred to the rehab center. He does not remember that Matt is working at the funeral home and they talk about it briefly. Matt does not tell his father that the funerals are helping him deal with his grief. By now, he knows that each funeral is different. There are literal celebrations, as in the woman who died shortly after her 100th birthday. An actor had written a funny play that was performed by his mourners. But in all funerals, there is someone whose grief soothes Matt's own. He admits too feeling “a warm buzz” from witnessing that grief, but says he no longer...
