Summary

In Chapter 2, “Head to Foot,” Matt notices the things that have changed in his life because of his mother's death. The things he misses includes the smell of Daisy's cooking and the sound of her singing. She had moved from South Carolina to Harlem, hoping to begin a career in acting. Jackson also wanted to be an actor and they met while they were working in the same restaurant.

Daisy made Matt a cookbook that she titled “The Secret to Getting Girls, For Matty” (30). Matt has many happy memories of cooking with his mother. He opens the notebook briefly but finds he cannot look at it without overwhelming sadness. He closes it again and goes to the local bodega to get a sandwich instead.
