Part Ten, The Book Thief Summary
Hans's homecoming is a happy time in the Hubermann home. Hans plays his accordion and settles in to his desk job in Munich. The only shadow on his homecoming is the news of the death of Frau Holtzapfel's son and the knowledge that the Hubermanns' own son is fighting in Stalingrad. The parade of Jewish prisoners continues through town. Every time they march, Liesel watches for Max Vandenburg. In July, the body of Michael Holtzapfel is found hanging in a shop downtown. Michael left a note apologizing to his mother and confessing that he could not live with himself for wanting to live while his brother lies in a grave. Hans Hubermann is the one to give the news to Frau Holtzapfel.
