During the summer of 1942 Hans Hubermann suddenly has work again. The people of Molching need to darken their windows as the threat of air raids becomes a reality. Hans has so many jobs that he runs out of black paint with which to cover the windows. As a result, Hans begins mixing odd colors to make a close replica of black. Liesel begins going on jobs with Hans and is amazed at how complicated mixing paint proves to be. Liesel also discovers that Hans is not always paid cash for the work he does.
